Bestiary was shaping up to be another exciting update of Path of Exile

In Path of Exile: Bestiary, The Elder finally succeeds in exerting his influence over The Shaper, effectively combining two incredibly dangerous enemies in the most deadly fight the game has yet seen. The new Challenge League, too, is big on bosses. Some of the more difficult recipes available in Beastcrafting yield more than weapons. They also grant entrance to spirit boss encounters, which turn out to be some of the trickier fights in the game. Best those and you will gain powerful Unique item rewards. The Bestiary League also introduces four new item sets based on the spirit beasts, which should be perfect fodder for optimised builds.

While the Bestiary League is exciting all by itself, this new update also adds some crazy new challenges for Path of Exile's most hardcore players. The last update completely shook up the endgame by introducing The Elder, a boss that is corrupting the Atlas of Worlds and its creator, The Shaper. The randomized maps that players would run could now have special modifiers if they were corrupted by either The Shaper or The Elder, but the system is being expanded with Bestiary.

This league also introduces gear sets, which Wilson acknowledged can be both good and bad – good in that they’re cool and powerful when you get them all, and less good and cool if you’re still working toward them and feel obligated to fill out your sets. The particular set he showed me was the Craiceanna Set, themed around a giant crab boss, that can be obtained as random drops in game. Alternatively, you can craft their effects onto existing armor, using the Bestiary system, to gain the set benefits while using whatever armor you would normally wear, so you don’t need to feel forced into using a particular gear set that might otherwise not fit your build or style. The atlas is also receiving some end game content for more hardcore players. Previously, both the elder and shaper bosses couldn't appear on the same map. Both encounters were considered to be some of the hardest content in the game. This content, according to Wilson, is only meant for the top 0.1 percent of hardcore players. It’s meant to be as difficult as possible and inspire Twitch streamers to push themselves to the limit. “Two of these fights are the hardest in the game,” says Wilson. “It’s kind of designed for Twitch where very few people are gonna get a chance to see it and when they do play it, it’s gonna be a big event in the community.” The team believes that there should always be content for lower level players to aspire to, and in a world where lots of games are forsaking that in order to try and grab a more casual audience, it’s a breath of fresh air.

Grinding Gear is also looking to revamp the Ascendancy classes, which were first introduced two years ago. The goal is to bring class identity back to the various classes and offer incentive to play with all of them. Each class will also have some new abilities to play with. For example, the Berserker will have a Rage attribute that increases after each kill. Rage will increase the player's attack power the longer it stays active, but Rage will also siphon off the Berserker's life, so there's a risk in overdoing the Rage meter.
